“Damn it, Jane,” she scolded him, taking refuge in the familiarity of their bickering routine. “Don’t do that. My heart can’t take it.”

He shrugged, unperturbed, and offered her a wicked smile. “It isn’t my fault, I always seem to have that effect on women. Blame nature for gifting me with the genes for overwhelming attractiveness.”

Lisbon rolled her eyes. “Yes, it’s an uphill struggle not to swoon at your feet,” she said. “You know, I do feel rather light-headed- although it could be that your gigantic ego just sucked all the oxygen out of the room. If you could park it outside, I’d appreciate it.”

Rather than taking umbrage at her sarcasm, he lifted his hands defensively. “Jeez, woman, you sure are snippy when you wake up.”

She tried out a one-shouldered shrug, careful not to jar her injury. “Give me a break, I just got shot. You weren’t any better when you went blind, temporarily. If I recall correctly- and I do- you were much worse.”

“Do I get to pinch you when you insult me?”

“No.”

“Double-standards, Lisbon? I thought better of you. Surely you’re not trading on the fact that you’re a woman-”

“Hey, it’s not like that. My actions were justified,” she protested. “The hospital staff shouldn’t have had to put up with your attitude, they were trying to help and they didn’t deserve to be insulted. However,” she added in severe tones, “You totally deserve it.”

Moment:

"Come on Lisbon. Loosen up, it's just a boat." It wasn't everyday that he let her get away with hiding things but he knew that she was trying to keep him from seeing how much she enjoyed being so close. He liked it just as much, but he was better at keeping his emotions in check.

"It's a box." He loved the way her eyes sparkled in challenge, just baiting him along. Begging him to keep up the bantering.

"I could hypnotize you into believing it's a boat."

"You hypnotize me and I'll kick your ass." This time she couldn't hide the smile that threatened to over take her features and it made her look even more breath taking in his eyes. Was it really necessary for the sun to be shining at just the right angle to make her look like she was glowing? Stupid sun.

"What shall we name her?"

"How about the S.S. Rinky Dink? And why do men label everything as 'her'?" The way his face scrunched in obvious distaste at the name she suggested caused her to laugh softly. It was a sound that Jane wasn't used to hearing but every time he did hear it he found it to be absolutely beautiful.

"We can't call her the Rinky Dink! It's degrading. How about the Chocolate Charade?" Lisbon hadn't forgotten the gift or the odd way he had given it to her, and it seemed like he wanted her to think about it. Did it mean something?

"What the hell does that even mean?" Reminded of the chocolates she popped off the lid and placed one in her mouth. She sighed in content as the deliciousness melted against her tongue.

"It's a boat name. It doesn't have to mean anything."

“Hey, Earth to Jane. You still in there?”

He straightens up in one swift movement and raises his eyes to meet hers. She looks bemused – just one of the many looks that he finds adorable on her. He beams at her and watches ‘bemused’ change to ‘warily charmed, but suspicious’, another personal favourite.

“I was thinking of cherries,” he says slowly, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

“Cherries.”

“Yes, cherries.”

“Care to venture a reason, or are you just going through a fruit phase?”

“No particular reason,” he says with a shrug, unable to stop his gaze from wandering briefly to that glistening temptation. “I just find myself with an unaccountable craving for cherries.”

“Oh, really?”

“It must be this lovely summer weather we’re having.”

“It’s California, Jane. It’s always like this.”

“Well, perhaps I just have a new-found appreciation for my surroundings,” he says, knowing he’s aggravating her as usual, and delighting in it as he always does.

“Well, can you go appreciate somewhere else? You’re driving me nuts staring into space and smiling like that. It’s creepy.”

“Certainly, my dear Lisbon,” he says, rising to his feet and heading out of the office. As he passes her, he pauses as if remembering something. “Oh, by the way, you’re looking particularly lovely today. Positively… ripe.” He saunters away, leaving her to contemplate his true meaning.

“Ripe? What the hell is that supposed to mean?” He can picture her looking down at herself and trying to work out if his words were a compliment or an insult. “Damn it, Jane, get back here!”

“What’s the status on Operation Penguin Love Reunion?”

Realization dawned on her. Jane was fishing to see if her brother’s wedding was back on.

“I thought you were the psychic one.”

“Psychics don’t exist.”

“So you say.”

“You’re avoiding my question.”

“That’s because it’s classified information.”

“Well, I guess I’ll find out when I pick you up at nine tomorrow.”

Lisbon glared at him.

“You’re not picking me up.”

“Yes I am. Will you be wearing blue?”

“Jane…”

“You’re right, who am I kidding?” he exclaimed, slapping his forehead. “Your dress is obviously green.”

“Jane...”

“I’m going to have to buy a new tie, hmmm.”

“You’re not coming.”

“I was invited.”

“No, you weren’t.”

“Yes, yes I was.”

“You invited yourself,” she said incredulously.

“Minor details.”

Chapter/Shot: Red M&Ms

Moment:

He looked over to Lisbon, who was handing her bag of remaining M&Ms to Rigsby in the seat in front of her. Swiftly, he snagged a few of her red M&Ms. She whipped her head around.

“Jane! Hands off. If you want M&Ms, get some from Rigsby,” she said, her hand hovering protectively over her own stash of red coated chocolates.

“I don't want those. I want the red kind,” he replied. She frowned.

“You're not having any of my pretzels. And no more M&Ms,” she warned. His responding grin surprised her, and then made her peer at him suspiciously.

“What?” he asked innocently.

“Why do you look so mischievous?”

Jane laughed and found the red M&Ms that made him remember his daughter's antics didn't make him sad, didn't make him feel possessive, but rather made him want to share. For the first time in years, he wanted to teach someone else what the colors meant.

But not today. For now, he'd relish the confused look on Lisbon's face.

“JANE!”

And pilfer her candy.
