The next day when Cho and Rigsby arrived at work, each found a small padlock, still in its packaging but somehow minus the key, on their desk with “Thanks” written on it in black felt. Neither said anything as they each tucked it away.

Nothing was said when Jane returned to work the day after that, but Cho did see Jane drop two small keys into the pen holder on his desk before he took off his coat. Cho said nothing, only giving a small two-finger wave in return to Jane before returning to his work, catching sight of Rigsby doing the same out of the corner of his eye.

A month later when Cho heard they were investigating what looked to be a Red John case, he said nothing when Lisbon instructed them not to call Jane because of his suspension and as she added something about Jane maybe learning a lesson before leaving the room. He waited until he was by himself before calling Jane to give him a heads up. Suspended or not, he needed to be there.

Some things just went without saying.

Once a year, they would sit with each other. Mostly in silence. Sometimes holding hands, reminding themselves that they were alive, even if they weren’t living.

And those times when they really touched, but not physically, Jane allowed himself to imagine a different life. The path he hadn’t taken, but probably should have.

He just hoped she didn’t do the same. He wanted her to move on, to be happy. Even if it was with someone else. Someone he would never meet, never see.

When that moment came, he would smile and pretend to be happy with his lot. Pretend he didn’t have any regrets.

Pretend he didn’t love her.

But mostly, he would pretend that what he didn’t see didn’t exist.

At that moment, Van Pelt opened the door staring at the paperwork in her arms saying something about not knowing what to fill out. She froze in the door at the sight in front of her.

Jane and Lisbon also froze in their place, lips still locked but no movement taking place except their eyes flashing open. Jane closed his eyes again after just a split second of shock. He began kissing Lisbon again. And after a second, Lisbon started kissing him too, her hands still locked around his hair and his arms still holding her waist.

Jane lifted his hand slowly, his index finger raised, signaling for Van Pelt to wait a minute which wasn’t hard. She was still frozen in place from pure surprise. Jane pulled back and smiled a heart melting smile at Lisbon, who smiled sweetly back. He kissed her again quickly, enjoying it for one more second before he turned around to look at Van Pelt and stand by Lisbon’s side. His hand slid into Lisbon’s.

“I’m sorry.” He said, smiling in pure joy. “We were just on our way out.” And with that, he headed for the door, pulling a flustered Lisbon along with him.

“Ever heard of rule fifteen?”

His brow furrowed. Back to the rules? “Rule fifteen?”

She nodded. “Yes. How to avoid something. More of a technique rather than a rule, maybe. This one is specifically designed for avoiding conversation.”

His confusion didn't lessen. He had just basically confessed his feelings, his intentions, to her and she wanted to avoid him. Not a good sign. He opened his mouth, ready to plead his case.

The words never came though. His mouth was busy with other, more important, things. As his hands were sliding down Lisbon's sides, just feeling her once more, he had a rather inane thought.

He could really come to love rule fifteen.

"I know. I picked that up from the caring about me and needing me speech." The teasing smile reappeared on his face letting her know that he was back to normal. Well as normal as he could be.

"You just can't leave well enough alone can you?" Lisbon felt his arms lock around her waist as soon as she had tried to move. The smile fell from her face as she watched his eyes darken and every muscle in her body quit working when he brought his hand up to caress her cheek. She didn't know what he was doing or why but his fingers left her cheek burning with an intensity she hadn't known was possible from one simple touch. "I.."

"Shh." This time she listened to him and as he leaned in those last couple of inches, she knew they'd be alright. The last thing she noticed was the way his eyes sparkled a brilliant blue before the feeling of his lips took over. Surprisingly she didn't shove him away, perhaps she should have, but instead she pulled him closer. He was warm, soft, and alive underneath her wandering hands. His lips were demanding and pleading at the same time. Almost like he wasn't sure this was the right thing to do and maybe it wasn't but they were already in over their heads. He wasn't going to back out. Nothing was going to stop them now. Not his pride. Not his anger. Nothing.

There were things in this world they would never understand. The way something completely horrific could lead to something so good was one of them. How at the end of the day nothing else mattered but the two people occupying the same space was another. The one thing that was beyond explainable was how a tragedy and loss of love led to a new found comfort. A new friend. A new kind of love. They didn't know what tomorrow would bring or the day after that but they knew that tonight was theirs and nothing was taking that away.

“Just one more question. And you really don’t have to answer it if you don’t want to. But on the wall opposite…you know…what’s with all the tallying?”

His face is serious again, his eyes sorrowful. “Oh, that’s my scorecard. On the right are all the people I’ve hurt, lied to, conned and cheated. On the left are the people I’ve helped. We’ve helped.” He corrected himself. “The people we’ve saved”

“But you don’t believe in all that cosmic score-sheet stuff, Van Pelt’s ‘Kingdom of Heaven’?”

“I don’t. But working with you has made me believe again that a man is the sum of his actions. Something I had forgotten. And I’m even beginning to think that one day I will care what that will add up to for someone.” In his eyes is that intensity that he saves for moments like these. Every word carries the weight of the universe. “And to make it matter to someone else, it has to matter to me first.”

Mr Nancy watches the young man stride off down the boardwalk. Pulls (from somewhere) a lighted cigarillo. Speaks to the air.

“You done teasin' that boy, madame voudouine?”

“Sweet child. He a silver-tongued heart-breaker.” The shadows twist, edge of a silver earring, flash of teeth, scent of the swamp. “This my place, old spider, you know it.”

“Just passin' through.” Puffs a little on his cigarillo. “Figured I might pay my respects. Didn't know you was keeping company.”

“He has life to spare.” Her voice grows fainter. “Enough for a night.”

“Ah, to be young again.”

And there is nothing on the boardwalk but shadows fading before the sun, and a small brown spider running into a crack in the wall...
