Nominee: Regrets

Moment:

She looked at his eyes and wondered if he was regretting what he had indirectly (in a way) done to her. “I’m glad. Life is precious, Jane. I’m glad you chose life.”

He shook his head. “No. You misunderstand me. I chose your life. Your life is precious.”

Awareness crackled between them, indefinable but strong. She nodded solemnly. It wasn’t exactly what she wanted to hear, but she thought maybe it was a step forward, a step toward the better. She thought maybe she could trust him to have her back. She reached out and laid a hand against his arm, giving it a brief squeeze before pulling back. “Thank you.”

And in that moment, it felt like something broken came back together. Still marred with a crack, but nonetheless whole once more. Maybe they weren’t fixed, but somehow the world felt a little more normal. A little more stable.

She turned away and headed to the stairwell, sure that he would follow her and nosily sit in on her check-up. She searched her feelings and found that she wasn’t suspicious. Her anger had diminished.

Jane watched her back. He had always loved that he could bring out her expressiveness—one of the many reasons he needled her. To get a rise. But, today, right now…well, he thought that the view of her back was one of the best things he’d seen in a long time.

Not because she was alive, though that definitely contributed to it.

But because she trusted him again. Even if just a little, she trusted him enough to show him her back.

As he left the roof, he searched his feelings and found that he didn’t have any regret about his actions in the last hour. He didn’t feel like he had betrayed his family. He had saved Teresa Lisbon for the world. For himself.

And he didn’t think he could ever regret that.

Nominee: A Tale About a Smile -Chapter 2 Oneshot

“I-I needed to...” Catching on his own words, Jane motioned his brush limply towards the nightmarish symbol behind him. Lisbon watched his lips tremble and jaw clench as more tears continued down his angelic features. “I want to feel again, Theresa. I want to live…”

A silent sob racked his body and then one not so silent—loud and deep. Lisbon rushed to him, rapping her arms around his tensed form. Soon she heard the paint brush clack to the hardwood and then felt his body give, taking him to his knees. Before she could react, his arms roughly encircle her waist and pulled her to him, burying his head into her stomach. And then he began to shake.

“Let it all out, Jane. Let it go.” She whispered into the top of his head, running her hands over his back and through his thick curls while he continued to poor out seven years of pain and sorrow in her embrace. “I’m right here…”

“I know.” She heard his muffled words. “That’s why I stayed.”

Lisbon cried for Jane’s loss that night, she cried for his pain and although his sobs tore through her very core, she cried with happiness. For the tears he’d held at bay all those years and the ghoulish smile now half obscured, were coming down tonight and Lisbon could only feel hope for the man she held in her arms and heart.

Moment:

"Usually, you only annoy me two or three days a week, the other days you take a break." She explains.

This is new. My behavior follows a pattern? How did I never notice this? "Really? I do?"

"It's not like I keep a diary about you..."

"No?" I ask with a broad grin and waggle my eyebrows suggestively.

She completely ignores my remark, but with satisfaction I notice the slight redness that creeps up her neck.

"The point is," She diverts. "... this week you kept at it five days in a row.

Monday: You hypnotized a suspect even though you promised me not to do it.

Tuesday: You challenged Rigsby to put a peanut in his nose which resulted in me driving him to the ER and missing the ballet performance of my niece.

Wednesday: You got the two of us stuck in an elevator because you wanted to see what happens when you press three buttons at once and then faked claustrophobia to make me comfort you.

Thursday: You took my hand while we walked through the hallway to the office and refused to let go, not even when Minelli came our way. And then you weren't helping at all when you told him that we were just having a 'bonding moment'.

Today: The cat incident."

"Oh." It does sound pretty bad, all in all. "Now I understand why you reacted so extreme today."

"Good."

"I'm really sorry. Next time, just start the silent treatment a couple of days earlier to stop me from going on." I reassure her sincerely.

“W-Well, it was on short notice…” She stuttered nervously. “Like you could have found a different rule to break! Go ahead, come up with one off the top of your head that I could have done. Remember Jane, I don’t have the uncanny ability to hypnotize people like you do.”

“Ok…” He paused for a short moment. “You could have easily bribed the woman with money to forget this whole situation. Instead, kissing me pops into your head. And you say it didn’t mean anything…” He gave her a knowing look and raised his eyebrows.

Lisbon’s cheeks started turning red again. “Well, it didn’t! I… I was just saving my job and proving myself at the same time.”

He smiled an eye-crinkling smile that could have melted her heart. “Sure…” He said, knowingly. “And the blush coloring your face doesn’t mean anything either.”

“Shut up Jane.” She said angrily, trying to hide her face with her hair as she made for the door. Jane caught her arm and held her in front of him.

“I’m sorry Lisbon. I’m making you angry.”

She avoided his eyes and tried to jerk her arm away. "Jane..."

“No really…” He said quietly, stooping to her level to make eye contact. “I’m sorry. I am really proud of you.”

Lisbon straightened up to look up at him. “It’s fine.”

Okay, I'm only doing this because we need one more to fill out this category... And I know this is going to sound supremely narcissistic but I think I did a good job on this! #whistles

“So,” Jane started carefully. “Does this mean you forgive me for that tiny incident at the restaurant?”

Involuntarily, a tiny smirk tugged at her lips as Lisbon shook her head.

“Not a chance, I’m still reporting your little pyro-show to Minelli.”

“What if I promise never to do it again?”

Lisbon folded her arms across her chest.

“Like I’m supposed to believe you.”

“Hey, I thought you trusted me. I’m a responsible adult.”

“You and the word responsible don’t belong in the same sentence without the word not.”

“Now that’s a rude thing to say, woman. It’s downright slanderous. I could sue you.”

Rolling her eyes, she walked to the door and held it open for Jane.

“Bring it on.”

“Oh you will hear from my lawyers.”

Jane walked out ahead of her towards the bullpen as she let out a contented sigh of relief. It was then she noticed Cho standing beside the one-way glass. After exchanging nods, Lisbon followed in Jane’s wake. He was already in the kitchen making his multi-step process tea.

“I thought you were calling up your lawyers,” she quipped.

“I was but then I remembered I hate lawyers.”

He grinned at her as he ripped open a new tea bag and dropped it into a second mug. Lisbon floated a brow skyward as he handed her the extra drink.

“Peace offering,” he explained before hastily adding. “Don’t worry, it’s not poisonous.”

Eyeing him sceptically, she blew at the steam before taking a slow sip. After gulping down the tea, Lisbon dramatically grabbed at her chest and made a face.

“Very funny.”

The pair smiled at each other as if they were the only two people in the entire world, both completely unaware that Rigsby and Van Pelt were watching them in mild amusement.

“Thanks for the tea, Jane.”

“It was my pleasure, Lisbon.”

The tender look in his eyes confirmed what Lisbon already knew in her heart. Patrick Jane would indeed be a wonderful father again. And although she’d never admit it to herself, at least not yet, she wouldn’t mind if he wanted to be the father of her own children. Maybe, someday.
