"So that's it," he sighed, settling back into the seat. "You're just going to have Minnelli fire me."

"I need to protect my team," she stated, "And if that means having you leave CBI then so be it."

Jane's normal mask was gone now. It had been replaced by one of stone as he looked at her with eyes that seemed to peer at her soul. "IS that so Teresa?" he questioned.

Teresa bit the inside of her cheek. He had never called her Teresa before. Obviously it was a tactic to throw her off guard. It wouldn't work. "It's the way of the world," she said, using his own words against him.

She had kissed Patrick that night. As usual they had had a difference of opinion over how to pursue the case, regardless of the fact that Teresa was his supervisor. This particular time it was about his insensitivity towards one of the victim’s relatives. Teresa had dragged him away from the others until they were standing at the far end of the stretch of sand, the only sound coming from the lapping waves.

“Do you realise how insensitive you were? That woman just lost her only daughter and her husband has only months to live!” Teresa had half-screamed at him, letting out all of her pent up frustration. She was pretty much certain this wasn’t the way you were supposed to feel after being proposed to.

“Insensitive?” Patrick replied, his own eyes blazing with something that Teresa had assumed was anger. “You’re accusing me of being insensitive, Teresa?” He rarely called her by her first name, she should have taken this as a warning.

“Well, you were.” She shot back equally as angry now. How dare he talk back to her like this?

“You should know,” He said coldly. “You are the expert. Stringing along some guy who’s crazy about you just because you’re too scared to admit your true feelings for someone else.”

“What do you mean?” Teresa asked, meeting his eyes and realising that what she had previously assumed was anger had actually been desire. She had taken his face in her hands them, kissing him hard, nipping at his lower lip, their teeth clashing in the frenzy of passion. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have...”

Patrick took her hands, noticing the diamond ring on her left hand for the first time. “No, you probably shouldn’t.” He looked sad now and Teresa hated herself for this, knowing that he was probably thinking of his murdered wife now. “Is this new?” He asked. She nodded, unable to form words with him looking at her like that. “Well, congratulations Lisbon.” He said, dropping her hands and walking away.

Teresa wanted to go after him; call to him and explain herself but she just stood there alone on the beach. The sand might as well have been quicksand.

“What the hell are you staring at? And get that stupid smirk off your face. I’m sure you don’t want to be here either.”

“I’m not the one not wanting to talk about it. You are.” Jane said from his chair on the other side of the table from her.

“Talk about what? How you showed up at my house at 6:00 in the morning pounding on my door like there’s no tomorrow to tell me you have feelings for me, like it’s my fault you shot the only link we had to Red John.”

“Don’t blame yourself.”

“Oh, I don’t. I blame you.”

“You know, if you had just followed the plan we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

“Oh, right. We’d have Red John and you’d be dead.”

“You don’t know that, I might have made it out alive.”

“But it’s not likely, is it? You shot a man because you cared about me. I stopped you from getting killed. There. We’re even.” She turned to the window again. “All better. Let us out now.”

“I don’t think so,” was Rigsby’s answer.

“Ass.” She mumbled under her breath.

“What was that?” Jane asked cheerfully.

“Who said I was talking to you?” She grumbles as she walked around the room.

“Do you know what I think the problem is?” Jane asked her, standing up and walking towards her.

“I don’t really care.” She said, not backing away as he comes closer.

“Sure you do. I think that we are both just too afraid to say the real reasons we did the things we did. Me shooting Sheriff Hardy and you coming in too early.”

“Oh, really. And what might that be?” She asked, her tone quiet now, not as angry. There was a ghost of a smile on her lips.

“I don’t just care about you, Lisbon. I feel for you like I haven’t since my wife and that scares the hell out of me.”

She looked at him wide eyes, realizing what he had just said. “Really?” She did take a step back this time, to find that she had walked into the corner.

“Yes, Lisbon, really. And I think you feel the same way, but I don’t know why you’d be angry about it.”

This caused her anger to flare again and she pushed him firmly away from her. “You don’t know why I’d be angry about loving a man who’s so hung up on his dead wife that all he sees is revenge for her killing? You know, people are murdered every day and you don’t see all our victims wanting to avenge their deaths, do you? But no. You have to be freaking special. No one in the world is as special as Patrick Freaking Jane; you have to wear your wedding ring 6 years after she dies. 6 years. You have to be so hung up on her that you can’t even open your eyes to the possibility of loving someone else, the possibility that someone else could care for you.” She had backed him up against the opposite wall now and was vehemently pushing against his chest with each new sentence.

He grabbed her hands to stop her. “Did you say that you loved me?” He sounded bewildered.

“What? Everything else I’ve said and that’s what you focus on? That I love you? So what if I do? What are you going to do about it?”

The question wasn’t even out of her mouth when she felt his lips on hers. It was tender and gentle and over entirely too fast.

“You call that a first kiss? After all this arguing, that’s all the passion you could muster for a first kiss?” Lisbon didn’t give him a chance to respond before she had grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him down to her mouth in a crushing kiss. Behind it was all the anger at his arrogance and the pain she felt for costing him his one link to his ultimate goal.

He hadn’t gone home that night and he watched Teresa Lisbon enter the office before any other members of their team as usual. She didn’t seem surprised to see him as he stretched, grinned and followed her to her office. Leaning against the doorframe he watched her get ready for the day ahead.

“Don’t you have some where else to go at night?” she asked him and he grinned at her wolfishly raising his arms above his head and lacing his fingers through his hair.

“I just like seeing the lovely sight of your face first thing in the morning Lisbon” in response to his comment she sent him a withering look that was anything but lovely and he laughed at her. She shook her head and turned away from him opening and shutting drawers on her desk. After a few moments she looked up at him and sent him a dark glare.

“Okay where is it?” she demanded out stretching her hand to him and he tried to smile innocently

“Where’s what?” he said with his most innocent smile but Lisbon’s glare didn’t falter. She was far too used to Patrick Jane and his constant need to be a pain in her ass for that. Even as charming as his smile was.

“My stapler. I know you have it” she told him slowly and he shrugged slowly still with than infuriatingly charming half smile on his face and she knew that she wouldn’t be seeing it again till he decided to give it back to her and who knew when that was going to be? Certainly not her and with it being Jane she doubted anyone would.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about” he said as he jumped straight on her couch and settled down with his arms resting behind his head and his feet dangling over the arm. Patrick had to admit he loved seeing Lisbon get mad especially if he were the reason behind it. Why? He wasn’t sure himself, perhaps because he really was just a childish pain in the ass that enjoyed annoying her or maybe, just maybe, it was because she looked damn attractive when she got mad. He’d like to think it was the first but he wasn’t so sure anymore.

Silence settle once more in the office as he watched her and both of them were keenly aware that stealing her stapler only served one purpose – diverting attention from what had happened the day before. Lisbon had been shocked and hurt. Of course she knew how much Jane wanted to avenge his family, she understood why he’d want to kill that son-of-a-b**** but when he admitted that he would easily choose death over life. It had chilled her to the bone seeing the calm expression on his face as he told her that once Red John was dead he had no more reasons to live. Could she imagine her life without their endless bickering and his constant quest to annoy the hell out of her? The answer was no.

She sat down and looked over at him. He was watching her again. She knew he did that a lot of the time when he thought she couldn’t see or perhaps not caring that she could. She wasn’t sure how that made her feel but everything about him confused the hell out of her.

“I meant what I said” he said slowly “I would have died so you could have Red John”

He smiling again but it didn’t reach his eyes. It was no where near “And I meant what I said. You’re being selfish” she retorted “Don’t you see there’s other people that rely on you? That care for you here?” she asked and he looked away from her up to the ceiling.

“I know but I made a promise to my family” he said and in that moment his voice was lacking all of the frivolity that she was used to hearing.

“And do you really think your family would want you to become a murderer Jane?” she asked just as serious as him and he didn’t answer her “Would they really want you to waste your life?” she added again and something happened that she had never been expecting. Patrick Jane finally snapped.

He jumped to his feet all traces of the amused affection he held for her gone from his face. His jaw was clenched tightly and his eyes blazing with fire. If it had been anyone else she would have been scared but even now she trusted Jane not to hurt her. Even now when it seemed he had lost all sense of control. “How the hell am I suppose to know?! I can’t! HE took them away and I’ll never know WHAT they wanted from me!”

He sounded broken, defeated and she felt her heart break for him again and again. His ever cheerful banter and easy smile was nothing more than a constant façade covering the bleeding wound that Red John had left in him that would never heal. She could feel his agony and it made her want to do nothing more than ease his pain.

But how could she? He always wore his façade around her so how could she help him if he didn’t trust her with his true self, with the pain he was in. She couldn’t and she hoped against all hopes that someone would be able to even if it wasn’t her. Patrick Jane was a good man; he hadn’t deserved what Red John had done to him.

She stood up and watched over to him even though he was looking anywhere but her face and lay a hand on his arm “I am sorry Jane but I can’t let you endanger yourself over this. You’re my agent, my responsibility and most of all you’re my friend. I couldn’t live with myself if you got hurt”

He was silent for a moment before composing himself and glancing back at her charming smile fixed back in place and all traces of his outburst just a few moments ago wiped away clean. His barriers were firmly back in place and Lisbon was both disappointed and relieved. Though she wanted Jane to be himself with her and share how he was feeling seeing the darkness within him scared her more than she could ever admit. When he was acting, when he was constantly smiling and teasing it was easy to forget the lust for Red John’s blood that festered within him. Sometimes things were just easier when you pretended.

“Aww don’t get all sentimental on me Lisbon” he told her cheerfully

“I’ll try and refrain in the future then” she responded back taking on his own teasing, cheerful tone. It wasn’t just Jane who pretended after all.

“What the hell are you doing here, Jane?”

He grins—something he does all the time, but it feels strange. He ignores the question.

“Why are you crying?”

Her green eyes suddenly look deadly. “None of your business.”

“Oh, come on, Lisbon. Sharing is caring.”

She rolls her eyes at him. They are slightly bloodshot, and her lids are puffy. “What do you want?”

He frowns. It’s an interesting question. Just what is he doing in here? “I don’t want you to cry.”

She doesn’t say anything, but he detects a slip in her face, a chink in her armor.

“Not for me, anyway,” he says, his voice genial, but face sober. “Don’t cry for me. I’m a lost cause.”

She flinches, briefly shuts her eyes. “Don’t say that.”

“It’s true, Teresa.”

Lisbon turns her head, facing away from him. Not wanting to give up.

“Teresa,” he murmurs. “Look at me.”

She does. There are tear tracks on her face, her cheeks are blotchy. And yet she shines entirely through all that, she looks tough, and somehow still beautiful.

“I know you like to fix things, Teresa. I know. It’s who you are.” He pauses, gives his words a moment to land. “But you can’t fix me. No one can. I’m too broken.”

He’s never seen her so sad. “Don’t say that,” she repeats.

“It’s the truth. I’m not worth it.” He is still smiling. “So don’t be sad.”

“Yeah, that works. Sadness erased. They should have you give therapy sessions, Jane.”

Without warning, Lisbon grabbed his arm and dragged him out of her office. The door slammed shut so loudly, the rest of the team were stunned silent.

“What the Hell was that?” Lisbon demanded furiously. “You crossed a huge line back there.”

Jane suddenly looked apologetic, letting out a ragged breath.

“I know, I’m sorry,” he mumbled.

“You’re sorry? You reduced the man to tears over something he obviously regrets.”

“I said I was sorry.”

The heartbreaking expression on his face startled Lisbon. Jane sunk into a chair, dropping his head into his hands. As quickly as it came, Lisbon’s anger subsided.

“Jane?” she called out, frowning at his unexpected despondence. “Jane?”

"Patrick." She says, testing the unfamiliar word on her tongue. "I know that you're concerned for my well-being and even more so the baby's, but moving in with me is not an option."

"Why not?"

"I need some time alone sometimes."

"You won't have much time for yourself once the baby is born."

"Exactly, that's why I need it now. You're here a lot already and that's okay, but you can't be here all the time."

"Why not? It does make perfect sense." He reasons. "Two adults, living together and preparing for the arrival of their baby."

"It would make sense if we were a couple, but we're not." She says cautiously.

"Why is that anyway?"

She hesitates, taken aback by what sounds very much like an accusation. "Can we just drop this? I really don't want to argue."

"Then don't. Let me live with you." He demands, with an air of waning patience.

"I can't."

"Why not? What is so bad about wanting to spend more time with you?"

"Sometimes it feels like you're suffocating me. It's all too much."

For a while he is silent, clearly shaken by her words. When he finally speaks, his voice is absolutely steady and calm, but the muscles in his jaw are taut with anguish. "Is that why you broke up with me?"

"I didn't break up with you, we decided..." She starts to defend herself, but he cuts her short.

"We didn't decide anything. You gave me some crappy nonsense about separating work and private life and you being my superior and how things could never work out between us. That it would be better to just be friends."

"And you agreed."

"I did not. I went along with it after I failed to change your mind. In fact, I think we are great together, but I thought it was best to give you the space you apparently needed, thinking that after a while you'd realize you made a mistake."

"Patrick." She tries not to sound as dismayed as she feels."We had sex three times, that hardly even counts as a relationship. It was better to end it before things got too serious."

"It was not, not for me."

"We were both lonely. You were so devastated after Red John killed himself in front of your eyes before you could and I was pretty shaken too after the horrible murder of those two children. We both needed some comfort. Spending time together helped us get through a rough time, but that's it. Nothing more and nothing less." Liar. But it's better this way, she tells herself.

"That might be right about the first night. What about the others? What about the night you invited me over for dinner. And don't tell me that you only called me because you were horny, we didn't even have sex that night. Why did you want to spend the night sleeping in my arms when you don't like spending time with me?"

Not being used to talk about her feelings or to defend the motives behind her actions, she doesn't know how to respond to this. In the end, she remains silent, biting her lip to stop herself from crying.

"I'm an idiot, believing that you would actually consider having a serious relationship with me." He scoffs, a very real irateness noticeable in his tone. "You know what I think? I think it's not so much that you don't want to be with me, but you're so scared by the idea of not controlling every aspect of your life that you're unable to commit."

"Says the man who still wears a wedding band from a marriage that ended years ago!" She shouts, hurling defiance, in an attempt to hurt him as much as his words hurt her.

She regrets her outburst the second she sees his devastated expression. When he collects his car keys from the counter and leaves the kitchen, she is disgusted with herself.

"I'm so sorry." She pleads, following him to the door. "I didn't mean to say that, I was just so angry."

He looks at her for half an eternity and she squirms under his scrutinizing eyes. She feels more antsy the longer he remains silent.

"When the baby is born, do you want me to be a visitor to your home instead of being a father to our kid?" He asks, trying his best to keep his voice under strict control. His face looks harsh in the shadowy light of the hallway. "What do you want, Teresa?"

She wants him to stay. She wants him to leave her alone. She wants to kiss him. She wants to punch him for making everything so damn complicated.

"I don't know what I want." She finally whispers dejectedly.

He turns away and leaves her apartment without looking back at her. "You better find out."

"Jane... Patrick..." She almost calls after him that she's pretty sure she loves him, but needs more time to come to terms with herself. Almost. But then she clenches her teeth over the words, because some things she is just too scared to say out loud. Angry with him, but even more with herself, she slams the door shut.
