Nominee: Overcoming Trust Issues

Jane grinned in triumph. He wondered if she realized that she’d tacitly agreed to go for ice cream with him again. The elderly gentleman currently handing him his cone certainly had, if the wink he’d shot Jane when Lisbon wasn’t looking was anything to go by. Jane winked back. It felt nice to have an ally, even if they were anonymous.

Lisbon appeared to have finally made up her mind, “I’ll have a scoop of maple walnut in a cone please.”

“And for your second scoop dear?”

“Jane.”

“Lisbon, you’re getting two scoops, so don’t even bother arguing. If you won’t pick then I’ll just get you a second scoop of maple walnut.” And then, because he knew it would get her, “Indulge.”

She glared at him, “Fine. A second scoop of maple walnut. With sprinkles. But I’m choosing where we eat them.”

“Anything you say dear.” She would have stalked off, but she didn’t have her ice-cream yet so she settled for her best murderous glare. Unfortunately Jane seemed immune. She should make him sit on the teeter-totter. Of course, knowing him he’d probably enjoy it.

Jane smiled to himself. Ah, annoyed Lisbon, a sight he was very familiar with. He infinitely preferred it to self-conscious or defensive Lisbon. He cheerfully paid the vendor, who was by this point, clearly trying not to laugh aloud.

Moment:

Jane leans his face closer to her, breathes the words into the back of her neck. “Love and affection.”

“What?”

He keeps rubbing her shoulders, briefly rests his head against her hair. She figits a little, and he chuckles, a slow rumble from the back of his throat. “You have to relax.”

“I can’t.”

He breathes evenly, slowly, doesn’t stop kneeding. Her skin is warm, softer than he expects it to be, and her hair smells like rasberry. She unconciously releases a breath she was unaware of holding, seeming to give up. Jane leans around her to see her face, gives her a reassuring smile.

“That’s the calm I was talking about,” he breathes into her ear.

Theresa closes her eyes for a second, an action he suspects is beyond her own control. She lets out slow, shallow breaths, for once doesn’t try to inch away from him. She even leans back a little, resting against him, giving him better access to her stressed shoulders. He can’t help but feel a leap of triumpth inside himself. She’s finally set her crime reports aside, and seems to be, what is it? Consumed. Entirely consumed. In him.

“I have to go home,” he says softly against her cheek. “Do you need anything?”

“Like what?” she whispers. Her delicate green eyes are saucer wide, she’s staring at him. She’s beautiful.

“Like anything,” he whispers back, meeting the stare.

She swallows hard. Jane can hear it, chuckles on the inside. “I’m fine,” she says.

Jane nods, stops massaging, but lets his hands rest on her shoulders. He leans over her, whispers “okay”, and lingers his lips against her cheek, through her hair, a half-second longer than courtesy would dictate. It’s warm, gentle. Everything seems to be going in slow motion. That was something else he told Rigsby later, about seduction. Slow things down. Get things quiet.

“Dinner was amazing. Thank you for everything, Jane. You didn’t need to come over and do all this.”

“Well I wanted to. I’m glad you actually let me come here and make you something.” He said bending down and placing a feathery kiss on her forehead. “I’ll come by and pick you up in the morning considering we took my car here and you can’t drive anyways. Call me at any time if you need anything.”

“I will. Thanks, Jane. Night.” She whispered sleepily and snuggling into her sheets.

“Good-night, Lisbon.” He said taking one last look at her and exiting her bedroom quietly. This was probably the best night he had had in a while. He might just have to convince Lisbon to do this again sometime, except the part involving her breaking her leg.

“Tired?” Jane asked, and Lisbon smiled.

“A little.” She admitted, even though the tiredness she felt was actually more than ‘just a little.’ Jane shifted, and stood up, sliding his hands under her legs and her back. “What are you doing?”

“Taking you to bed.” Jane said matter-of-factly, picking Lisbon up. She couldn’t be bothered to fight him, to make him put her down. Jane nudged open the bedroom door with his foot, and laid Lisbon down gently on the bed. “See? I told you that you could trust me.”

Jane turned to remove his shirt, and when he turned back round, Lisbon’s eyes were closed and her breathing regulated. Smiling, he turned back around, stripped out of his day clothes and changed into his night clothes. He slid under the covers next to Lisbon. He had just closed his eyes when someone whispered something in his ear.

“You know, you look very good naked.” It was Lisbon.

Jane chuckled.

“Good to hear.” He opened his eyes and pulled her towards him. He gently kissed her on the lips, and her breath caught in her throat. Smiling, she moved closer into his hold, and fell asleep smiling.

"I remember everything about that night, not only the useless stuff. I like to believe that this was the night when you got pregnant." His voice is tender now and she can feel that not only the tone between them is about to change.

"Why this one?" She asks, genuinely curious what makes this night stand out compared to the others they spent together.

"Because it was perfect. The sound of the rain against the window. Your face illuminated by the light of the candles that you set up after the power outage." His palm tenderly caresses her cheek. "Somehow it felt like we were the only people in the world, stranded on a deserted island. I watched you sleep for most of the night and by dawn I realized that I was able to love again."

Suddenly her heart is pounding in her chest and her mind is working on overdrive, trying to understand that he just - kind of, indirectly - told her that he loves her. She feels nervous, excited, scared and happy all at once. A lump forms in her throat and when she tries to say something, all she can produce is a weak croak. Not that she really knows how to put what she wants to tell him into words anyway, but she knows that she has to try.

"You should get some sleep. It's been a long day." Patrick suddenly tells her, seemingly oblivious to her inner struggle. As if. She knows that he must have noticed her weak attempt to respond to his confession, but he apparently decided for both of them that now is not the right time to continue that particular conversation.

Maybe he is right. She should probably sleep it over and polish her speech before speaking up. She turns off the light and rolls over to lie on her right side again. Unlike before, he now snuggles up to her and puts his arm around her. At least her body language sent the right message, even if her words failed her.

"I like the name Sullivan." She whispers in the dark.

She can feel him smile against her shoulder. "Me too."

"I'm glad you didn't choose Gilbert, I'd have to kick a guy with such bad taste in names out of my bed."

His laugh vibrates through her body when he embraces her even tighter. "You wouldn't dare."

No, she thinks that she probably wouldn't. His hand strokes her stomach in slow, lazy circles and this, in combination with the sound of his breathing, finally lulls her to sleep. The last thing she notices is his hand slipping under her shirt to rest directly on the skin of her belly for the night.

She doesn't mind, it feels like it belongs there.

A dark blond curl fell into his eyes and she reached up to push it back. Seeing something on her finger catch the light, she pulled her left hand down closer to her face.

There was a ring on her finger.

She looked back up at him to find his gaze intent, waiting. “Um, is this what I think it is?”

He nodded, not sure he trusted himself to speak just yet. She twisted the beautiful white-gold ring around her finger a bit nervously. “Patrick, you don't have to do this. It's fine. We're fine. I can wait.”

He took her hand in his and kissed each finger separately, delicately. “But I can't.”

Holding her hand against his bare chest, he leaned his forehead to hers. “Teresa, will you become my family in every sense of the word?”

She closed her eyes, feeling their breath intermingle in the space between them. She felt cool air for a moment as he pulled back before his lips were pressed gently to hers in an almost chaste kiss. Pulling back only minutely this time, he spoke the words against her lips.

“Marry me.”

His words were so sincere, so heartfelt, that she couldn't speak for a moment. His hold tightened imperceptibly around her hand before his arms once more slid around her, anchoring her to him.

“I'm holding you hostage until you say yes, by the way.”

His words startled a laugh out of her—one that she was a little embarrassed to say was a bit watery. She nodded against his chest. His hands smoothed up and down her bare back. “I can't hear you.”

She shoved at him playfully, causing him to roll onto his back and drag her on top of him. Sprawled across his chest, she lifted her head to look him in the eyes. “Yes.”

Nominee: Shopping - Meet Cute

Moment:

Lisbon just couldn't stop laughing. Somehow Jane had talked her into trying on dresses, and he had started commenting on the way she looked in them - not in a bad or rude way, but in a funny and even sweet way. Some of those dresses he brought her were indeed ugly, but then it was also amusing to hear how creative he was in commenting on the designer's skills. She would giggle every time and spin around, or dance on her tiptoes with a serious face.

In the end, after an hour of trying on and nearly laughing themselves to death, he stood there in front of her cubicle when she came out, and held up a wonderful yellow dress. Even in the artificial light it seemed to glow and she immediately fell in love with it. It was perfect.

Turning in front of the mirror, she knew that she had found her dress. It's color was bright and shining and didn't make her look too pale; the cut accentuated her figure, but didn't make her look too small; the long, wide sleeves hid her less-loved arms, although the chiffon they were made of was see-through; the skirt was long and flowing and soft against her skin. It looked like the dress of a fairy, yet not kitschy or too fairytale-like.

"That's it?" Patrick asked silently, watching her from his seat a few steps away from the mirror and noticing her pleased look and the little smile on her lips.

"That's it," Teresa answered.

“I just fancied having an extra present to unwrap later.” says the card, familiar spiky handwriting.

She grins, and holds up the cami top against herself.

Perfect from a boyfriend, though.
